What causes internet speeds to be much lower than advertised? at the moment, we have a plan that provides 1.5mbps internet service from RCN, and the realistic download speed is about 92kbps. I was wondering if upgrading to a better plan would increase the speed, or if it was due to another problem, like a bad modem or something. Also, is this just completely false advertising, or do some people actually get 1.5mbps download speeds?

Verizon internet service - negotiable? I was just informed by Verizon that my one year $14/month deal is almost up and now I would have to start paying $21/month for my internet service. I will switch companies before I do that - but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck (or advice) on negotiating with Verizon to remain at my currrent cost. I'm assuming they have the power to be flexible (like negotiating APRs with credit card companies). I'm assuming they bait people with the "low cost" and then just hope they will continue to pay the higher cost and avoid the hassle of switching companies. By the way, the company I'm thinking of switching to is DSL Extreme which is currently advertising service for $12.99 per month.

Does anyone know of a commercial cat fostering service? We will be travelling for an extensive period (c 12 months) next year and I'm thinking well ahead about how we find a home for our 2 14-year old cats. None of our close relatives or friends could look after them for us. We will try to re-home them but I think we may struggle given their age, and ideally we would arrange for someone to look after them for us in their own home until we returned. We would pay for food, bills and their general upkeep. I can't find this kind of service advertised on the internet. Most foster services are run for cats who have been left in a rescue centre. Does anyone have any ideas?
anyone heard of 125sms.com or Internet services AG? They have been harrassing me through email to pay £96 and really getting worried now. I thought it must be some sort of scam and had a look at their website and its say its a free text messaging site! I did a search and found lots of info about them advertising as a free text messaging but then invoice you £96! Any way to sue or get rid of Charter Internet services? I live in an area where only charter internet is available. Problem is, they cannot provide the bandwidth for all subscribers in my area. I am running on a 5mbps plan and my speeds average during peak hours(12am-12pm) is around 500-850kbps download and upload never changes, consistent around 450kbps. Now during those other hours when majority of people aren't online, it'll run at advertised speeds of 4500kbps down and 450kbps up. I've called over 20 times talking to third world morons who always give me a different reason and try putting the blame on my stuff. I've tried multiple modems, different routers, direct connections everything. Even had a tech come out and make sure my lines were fine. Everytime I call they say there's an outage. Thing is my internet is never out, just super slow, that's when I call. I have tested my neighbors speeds with my ps3's wifi, same slow results. They are running a scam and need to be shut down. what can I do? Well one of the reps said as long as you get over 3mbps of service that's fine. When I was able to upgrade from 3 to 5 that's what he said.
what should I expect from "free wireless Internet service"? I made reservations at a motel recently which advertised the above feature in its room. I instantly and instinctively assumed there would be a laptop/ keyboard waiting inside for me to use. Nothing of the sort. Although the clerk referred me to a close, off site internet cafe, I felt mislead and cheated. My boyfriend told me the room was merely "router compatible", that the motel grounds might have an "antenna" for a connection to a laptop that the customer brings with him; in short, he told me I misunderstood the language and that the motel really did deliver. I vigorously disagree and gave appropriate feedback to managment. As a comparison, if an airline says "service to city x", we assume they will provide the vehicle (airplane) to transport us there, right? Is this analogy faulty? Beyond this let-down, my stay was very adequate and enjoyable.

I have just recently filed for a DBA, and I have just started writing 2 separate business plans, generally the same idea but different themes. I think this could make a lot of money , and the return would greatly outweight the costs. These websites would generate profit through online advertising and a select few services we would provide to the user, but in order to build these 2 individual websites, I would have to put forth about 100,000 dollars worth (rough estimate), which would include all start up costs and etcs. Internet advertising explained? I am frustrated in attempting to learn about Internet advertising. I have an idea for a local website, that I expect would have relatively high traffic locally, and not rely on Search Engines to bring visitors. I do not have a product to sell, but an interesting service to provide on the website. I can't figure out how to profit from the potential traffic generated. The affiliated programs seem to only have very modest revenue returns. I may have potential to 'sell' local advertising on this site, but have no idea what I could expect that to be worth? I know esoterically, it's worth what they'll pay, but I'd love some real life examples. I'd be appreciative of realistic knowledgeable responses from those with experience in this type of website. anyone noticed how DSL-internet companies advertise low costs but when u call, the price is 4 times higher? i was looking 4 stand-alone DSL, & saw low prices advrtised ($14.99). yet when i called, there's always a reason why i don't qualify for the low rate. at&t said i had 2 have an at&t home phone b4 i could get the service. what? isn't stand-alone DSL an internet connection without a home phone line? i told her i had at&t cellphones w/5 lines but that didn't count. i called, at least 4 companies & was quoted from $42-$60 per mnth. plus contracts. one company had a 1yr contract with a 1yr renewal. ... isn't this the same as a 2yr contract? how dumb do they think customers r ? i'm also astonished by the various fees they charge. & their refusal to take responsibility 4 svc interruptions or intrnet speeds saying "our speeds r "up to" & not "exactly" the speed we quote"."they sometimes average 64 Kbps". What's wrong w/this picture? isn't this false advertising or worse? can anything be done about this? they take advantage of people who sign up w/o reading the fine print. how wrong is this?

I see ATT is advertising a "card" for your laptop so that you can get the internet in remote places. They say the card is free but you have to switch to their phone service to get it. I live in North Dadota and am often working in remote places. Is there a card that I can purchase. I have been using my verison cell phone as a modem, but they charge me 80.$ a month.
